Iron and steel industry is one of the pillar industries in South Africa, accounting for 16% of South Africa's GDP, steel smelting and steel manufacturing and other related staff are up to 19 million people. In 2016, South Africa's crude steel production was 6.1 million tons, down 4.6 percent year on year, ranking 24th in the world; crude steel demand totaled about 6 million tons. World Iron and Steel Association statistics show that as of 2016, South Africa, the apparent consumption of finished products 5 million tons, per capita consumption of finished products is only 90.4kg, the total consumption of steel market is low and has huge space. However, due to the financial problems of the country's government, highways, ports, airports, railways and other infrastructure projects is difficult to carry out smoothly. South Africa's domestic demand exceeds supply of electricity, has also become one of the elements restricting the development of iron and steel industry.
In order to prevent the influx of steel products from other countries into the domestic market, the South African government continuously improve the tariffs on imported steel products. As of June 2016, galvanized sheet, color-coated sheet, steel, wire, plate, cold-rolled plate, steel, semi-finished products and other 10 kinds of products to increase the tariff application was approved.
For imported steel products, the government of South Africa, in accordance with the requirements of the WTO (World Trade Organization) Rules, imposed 10% import tariffs in December 2015 and February 2016 respectively, and studied additional protective measures for its hot rolled coil, and also accepted the AMSA company's additional application of five tariff protection measures, which led to the South African steel market monopolize the steel pricing power by a small number of iron and steel enterprises. However, despite the relatively industrial system is well established , but for now, the overall strength of South African iron and steel enterprises is not high.
